Fall Weaning Calves: Timing, Methods, and Nutrition

Livestock · October 2025 · 5 min read

Fall weaning is a critical management event that affects both calf health and cow body condition heading into winter. Calves weaned at approximately 205 days of age using low-stress methods gain weight faster and get sick less often. A well-planned weaning program sets calves up for strong performance whether they are retained, backgrounded, or sold.

Timing and Age Targets

Most spring-calving herds wean in October or early November when calves reach 205 to 240 days of age. Weaning at this age allows cows to regain body condition before winter and ensures calves are mature enough to transition to solid feed. Weaning too early reduces calf weight, while weaning too late drains cow reserves needed for the next breeding season.

Target a body condition score of 5 to 6 on cows at weaning. Thin cows should be separated and fed to regain condition before cold weather arrives.

Low-Stress Weaning Methods

Fenceline weaning places cows and calves on opposite sides of a sturdy fence where they can see, hear, and smell each other. Calves settle down within 3 to 4 days and begin eating sooner than abruptly separated calves. This method consistently reduces bawling, walking, and weight loss during the transition.

Preconditioning Nutrition and Vaccination

Start calves on a preconditioning ration of good-quality hay, 2 to 4 pounds of grain or concentrate, and free-choice mineral. The goal is to teach calves to eat from a bunk and drink from a tank while maintaining gains of 1.5 to 2 pounds per day. Familiar feedstuffs reduce digestive problems during the weaning transition.

Administer respiratory vaccines (IBR, BVD, BRSV, PI3) and clostridial vaccines at least 2 to 3 weeks before weaning or at branding. A booster at weaning strengthens immunity before the highest-risk period. Preconditioned calves typically command a $5 to $15 per hundredweight premium at sale.
