Mid-Season Equipment Check: July Inspection

Seasonal Guide · July 2025 · 5 min read

July is the ideal time to inspect and prepare harvest equipment before the rush of fall. Catching problems now gives you time to order parts, schedule repairs, and avoid costly breakdowns during the busiest weeks of the year.

Combine Pre-Harvest Prep

Start by thoroughly cleaning the combine interior, removing old grain and debris that can harbor moisture and rodents. Inspect rasp bars, concaves, and sieves for wear, and replace any components that are beyond service limits. Check all belts and chains for tension and cracking, and verify that the grain loss monitors are calibrated and functioning properly.

Sprayer Inspection

Verify nozzle output uniformity by collecting flow from each nozzle into graduated cylinders — replace any nozzle that deviates more than 10% from the target rate. Inspect all hoses, fittings, and boom sections for leaks or damage. Flush the entire system with clean water and run a calibration check to confirm gallons per acre matches your controller settings.

Cooling and Tire Checks

Clean radiator screens and oil coolers on all tractors and self-propelled equipment, as summer dust and chaff restrict airflow and cause overheating. Check coolant levels, test antifreeze concentration, and inspect hoses for soft spots or cracks. Verify tire pressures on all equipment including grain carts, as underinflated tires increase fuel consumption and cause uneven soil compaction.
