Natural soil amendments supply essential nutrients from mined minerals, marine sources, and plant materials without synthetic processing. They release nutrients slowly as they weather and decompose, building long-term soil fertility rather than providing a quick fix. Understanding the nutrient content, availability rate, and proper application of each amendment helps you match inputs to soil test recommendations efficiently.
Rock phosphate contains 20-33% total phosphorus but releases it very slowly over 3-5 years. It works best in soils with a pH below 6.5 where acid conditions speed dissolution. Colloidal phosphate is a clay-mineral form that is more immediately available, containing about 20% total phosphorus with higher solubility than hard rock sources.
Apply rock phosphate at 50-100 pounds per acre based on soil test recommendations. Incorporate it into the root zone through tillage or topdress on pastures where soil organisms will slowly work it in. It is OMRI-listed and approved for certified organic production.
Greensand (glauconite) is a marine mineral that provides potassium, iron, and over 30 trace minerals. It contains about 3% potassium that releases over several years. Apply at 50-100 pounds per 1,000 square feet for gardens or 1-2 tons per acre for field crops.
Always base amendment applications on a current soil test rather than guessing. Over-applying phosphorus, even from natural sources, can create environmental problems and tie up other nutrients. Soil test every 2-3 years and track trends to see whether your amendment program is building fertility as planned.
Natural amendments work best as part of a comprehensive fertility plan that includes cover crops, compost, and crop rotation. They fill specific nutrient gaps that biological practices alone cannot address. Budget for their slow-release nature by applying well ahead of crop demand, ideally in the fall before a spring-planted crop.
