Small-scale pig farming offers one of the best returns per dollar invested for farmers willing to direct-market their product. Pigs convert feed efficiently, grow to market weight in about 6 months, and produce a product with strong consumer demand. Understanding housing requirements, feeding programs, and USDA processing requirements is essential for building a profitable small pork enterprise.
Hoop barns (fabric-covered hoop structures) are the most popular housing choice for small-scale pig producers because they are affordable, well-ventilated, and provide adequate shelter in all seasons. A 30-by-72-foot hoop barn can house 150 to 200 finishing pigs and costs a fraction of a conventional confinement building. Deep bedding with straw or corn stalks provides comfort and simplifies manure management.
Pasture-raised systems use portable shelters, shade structures, and electric fencing to rotate pigs across paddocks. This system works well for heritage breeds and premium marketing but requires more labor for fencing, water delivery, and feed distribution. Pigs will root extensively, so plan for pasture renovation after each rotation.
Pigs require approximately 6 to 8 pounds of feed per pound of gain from weaning to market weight, making feed the largest single cost in pork production. A standard corn-soybean meal diet balanced for lysine and other essential amino acids produces efficient growth. Phase feeding adjusts protein levels downward as pigs grow, reducing feed costs without sacrificing performance.
Maintaining a closed herd and practicing all-in, all-out management are the most effective health strategies for small pig operations. Avoid mixing pigs from different sources, and quarantine any new additions for at least 30 days before introducing them to the main group. Respiratory disease is the primary health challenge and is best prevented through good ventilation and reduced stocking density.
Work with a veterinarian to establish a basic vaccination protocol for circovirus, mycoplasma, and erysipelas. Deworm incoming pigs and maintain clean, dry bedding to minimize parasite loads. Internal biosecurity practices like dedicated boots and coveralls reduce disease introduction risk significantly.

All retail pork must be processed at a USDA-inspected facility. Custom-exempt processing (where the customer owns the animal before slaughter) offers more flexibility but limits where and how the product can be sold. Book processing dates well in advance, as small USDA plants often have waitlists of 3 to 6 months or more.
