Planting Alfalfa: Seeding Rates and Establishment

Planting Guide · May 2025 · 5 min read

A well-established alfalfa stand can produce high-quality forage for five to seven years, making it one of the best long-term investments in a hay operation. Success starts with proper seedbed preparation and seeding technique.

Seedbed Preparation

Alfalfa needs a firm, fine seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact for uniform germination. Correct soil pH to 6.8–7.0 with lime applied at least six months before planting, and ensure phosphorus and potassium levels meet soil test recommendations. A cultipacker pass before and after seeding firms the surface and prevents seed from being planted too deep.

Seeding Rate and Depth

Drill 15–20 lb/acre of inoculated seed at a depth of ¼ to ½ inch for the best stand establishment. Use seed pre-inoculated with Sinorhizobium meliloti or apply fresh inoculant at planting to ensure nitrogen fixation. Broadcasting requires a 20–25% rate increase and a follow-up cultipacking to press seed into the soil surface.

First-Year Management

Clip weeds at a 4- to 6-inch height to reduce competition without smothering young alfalfa seedlings. Do not harvest the first cutting until plants reach early bloom stage (about 10% bloom) to allow root carbohydrate reserves to build. Avoid grazing or heavy traffic in the seeding year, as young taproots are easily damaged by compaction and pulling.
