Preparing for Harvest: Equipment and Logistics

Seasonal Guide · August 2025 · 5 min read

August is the time to finalize harvest preparations so equipment, storage, and labor are ready when crops reach maturity. A well-organized pre-harvest plan minimizes downtime and positions your operation to capture the best possible quality and price.

Combine Inspection

Complete a thorough walk-around and operational check of the combine, running it at full speed to listen for unusual noises in the rotor, separator, and cleaning shoe. Replace worn feeder house chains, auger flights, and elevator paddles before they fail in the field. Verify that GPS yield monitors are updated, calibrated, and recording accurately by comparing monitor data to known loads.

Bin and Storage Prep

Sweep and clean all grain bins completely, removing old grain and fines that attract stored-grain insects. Apply a residual insecticide to bin walls and floors before filling, and test aeration fans for proper airflow. Inspect bin roofs, vents, and access doors for leaks that could allow moisture in, and repair any damage before the first load arrives.

Operations Planning

Create a harvest operations plan that maps field order, truck routes, bin assignments, and labor schedules. Prioritize fields based on crop maturity, lodging risk, and proximity to storage or delivery points. Brief your entire team on the plan, assign responsibilities clearly, and establish communication protocols so everyone can adapt when weather or breakdowns change the schedule.
