Soybean Harvest Timing: Moisture and Maturity

Harvest · August 2025 · 5 min read

Timing soybean harvest correctly balances moisture for safe storage against the risk of shatter loss from delayed cutting. Understanding maturity indicators and monitoring moisture daily during harvest helps capture maximum yield with minimal quality losses.

Maturity Indicators

Soybeans reach physiological maturity at the R8 stage when 95% of pods have turned their mature brown color. At this point, seed moisture is typically 30–33% and field dry-down begins. Monitor fields daily as maturity approaches — varieties planted on different dates or soil types may be ready days apart even within the same field.

Target Moisture

The ideal soybean harvest moisture is 13% for direct delivery to the elevator with no drying charges. Harvesting between 14–15% and drying on-farm is often worthwhile to capture extra yield and reduce shatter risk. Soybeans below 11% are prone to cracking and split seed, which increases foreign material and can result in dock at the elevator.

Reducing Shatter Loss

Shatter loss increases dramatically when soybeans dry below 11% or when pods are subjected to wetting-and-drying cycles after maturity. Harvest earlier in the day when pods are still tough from overnight humidity, and slow ground speed if shattering is visible at the header. Varieties with good shatter resistance scores should be prioritized for fields harvested last in your schedule.
