Stored Grain Insect Control: Prevention and Treatment

Pest Control · October 2025 · 5 min read

Insect infestations in stored grain cause weight loss, quality downgrades, and rejected loads at the elevator. Prevention through sanitation and temperature management is far easier and cheaper than treating an active infestation. Knowing the most common pests and their control options protects your stored grain investment.

Common Stored Grain Insects

The most frequent pests include:

Bin Sanitation and Residual Treatments

Thoroughly clean bins at least two weeks before filling. Sweep out all old grain, dust, and debris from floors, walls, aeration ducts, and surrounding areas. Spilled grain near bins is a primary source of reinfestation. After cleaning, apply a residual insecticide such as cyfluthrin or chlorpyrifos-methyl to interior bin surfaces.

Grain protectants applied directly to grain as it enters the bin provide an additional layer of protection for long-term storage.

Temperature Management and Fumigation

Cool grain below 50°F as quickly as possible using aeration. Most stored-grain insects stop feeding below 60°F and become inactive below 50°F. This is the simplest and most effective preventive measure.

If an infestation is detected, fumigation with aluminum phosphide is the primary treatment option. Fumigation requires certified applicator training, proper sealing of the bin, and strict safety protocols. Never enter a bin during or shortly after fumigation without proper respiratory protection and monitoring equipment.
