Transitioning to Organic: A 3-Year Roadmap

Organic Farming · June 2025 · 6 min read

Transitioning to organic production is a three-year commitment that rewards careful planning. A year-by-year roadmap keeps you on track with USDA requirements while building the soil biology and markets you will need.

Year One Foundations

Stop applying all prohibited substances and begin your 36-month clock by documenting the last application date on every field. Select a USDA-accredited certifying agent and submit your initial organic system plan. Focus on building soil health with cover crops, compost, and reduced tillage while sourcing approved inputs for fertility and pest management.

Year Two Adjustments

Evaluate what worked and refine your weed management and fertility programs based on first-year results. Trial organic-approved seed varieties to identify top performers for your region and soil type. Begin building relationships with organic grain buyers, co-ops, or direct markets so you have contracts ready when certification arrives.

Year Three Certification

Schedule your annual inspection with your certifying agent and ensure all records—input receipts, field maps, seed certificates, and harvest logs—are organized and current. After passing inspection and receiving your certificate, you can sell crops as certified organic at premium prices. Continue investing in soil health and diversified rotations to sustain yields without synthetic inputs long term.
